STEP 2: Know the Publications and Documentation

When you supervise others, you need to have a very good understanding of the types of publications and documentation that your company uses.  These include company policies, procedural guidelines, technical data and regulatory documents in relation to aviation and Health & Safety.

The reason you need to know about these and be familiar with there contents is because you will be the person your team will turn to for advice, such as issues relating to working practises and mandatory compliance.

There can be a view by some who think it is not their responsibility to be aware of such information however, in the role of a supervisor, you will have a duty of care to ensure the person you are supervising is; safe from harm and capable of accomplishing the task.  Failure to think about and look after those you supervise will create a team that may have very little respect for your position of authority.
